Sweatshops are the most important problem for the fashion industry: illegal production of brend clothes are sold for the same price of the real clothes from the factories! Many people don't see the difference between "Adidas" trainers from the company and "Abibas" trainers from the "Dina" mall. But is this a real problem?
A sweatshop is a manufacturing facility characterized by poor working conditions, violations of labor law, long hours, and low wages. The term originated in 1892, when concerned individuals began to speak up about the unsafe working conditions for American garment workers. Today, sweatshops can be found all over the world, although they are an especially big problem in developing nations. |
Interesting fact: In developing countries, an estimated 250 million children ages 5 to 14 are forced to work. But not always childrens are working there. Labor violations can take a number of forms. A sweatshop may be clean and well lit, for example, but it could still employ child laborers, or force employees to work long hours. Sweatshops can also be extremely dangerous for their employees; workers can be exposed to toxic substances or heavy machinery without adequate protection, for example.
Sweatshops also tend to use a number of techniques to control their workers, and employees are often kept in the dark about their labor rights. In some cases, for example, a manufacturer may provide housing and food for workers, essentially keeping them on the grounds of the facility at all times, and employees may be denied access to the outside world. |
However, nobody can say that all of the sweatshops are making bad production and have terrible conditions for workers. Many clothes have the same quality with the original, so differences between them may be only in price. We know a lot of exidence when sweatshops with the illegal and bad production were closed by policy. But nobody knows about closed manufactures that were producing good quality clothes and had brilliant conditions for workers. In many times sweatshops that were revealed had making illegal stuff like drugs or weapon.
Sweatshops can be different: from bad to good so we can't say that all of them are good or bad. It's not so easy to find out the quality of clothes and where are they from: "Dina" mall or legal factory. You must search for good-quality clothings by yourself. |
